MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Nature Spun Sport Weight by Brown Sheep; one skein each of, (A) #N17 French Clay;
(B) #N62 Amethyst; (C) #305 Impasse Yellow; (D) #N85 Peruvian Pink.
One Set of 5, Size 5 Double Point Needles. Stitch Holder. Tapestry Needle.

GAUGE: 6 stitches = 1 inch.

SIZE: Small Adult

KNITTING LEVEL: Experienced

SPECIAL NOTE:These socks were knitted from stash yarn that no longer had labels. The Nature Spun yarn suggested above is comparable both in color and in gauge. The Nature Spun colors are only slightly lighter in shade than original socks pictured. And, of course, any other color combinations from your stash would work great for this pattern.

PATTERN FOR SOCK #1:
With (A) cast on 44 stitches. Divide stitches evenly on 4 needles. Join yarn being careful not to twist. Continue knitting 7 rounds. Tie off (A).
Join (B) and work one round Knit, then a K2, P2 ribbing for 11 rounds. Tie off (B).

DECREASE OR INCREASE ROUND:
Special Note:decreasing or increasing is now required to accommodate proper chart design stitch placement. Decrease for smaller size socks. Increase for larger size.
Join (C) and knit one round decreasing or increasing 4 stitches evenly (40 or 48 sts).
Next 3 Rnds: Join (D) and knit next 3 rounds following Chart 1A below.
Next 4 Rnds: Tie off (C) and knit 4 more rounds.

DIVIDE FOR HEEL:
Special Note: Heel instructions are written for sock with 40 sts. Instructions for sock with 48 sts are in brackets.
Put last 10 [12] stitches just knit on free needle; knit first 10 [12] next round onto same needle (Heel flap stitches). Place remaining 20 [24] stitches on stitch holder (Instep stitches to be worked later).

Row 1:Turn work. (wrong side) Sl 1 as to purl, purl across row. Turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, K 1. Repeat Sl 1, K1 all stitches across.
Repeat these two rows until heel flap is desired length. (Usually 2-3/4 inches. Mine are much shorter as required for my foot. I have stubbly little feet, what can I say. LOL).

TURNING HEEL
Row 1 (wrong side): P12 [14], P2tog, P1. Turn, leaving 5 [7] sts unworked.
Row 2 (right side): Sl 1 as to knit, K5, SSK, K1. Turn, leaving 5 [7] sts unworked.
Row 3: Sl 1 as to purl, P6, P2tog, P1. Turn, leaving 3 [5] sts unworked.
Row 4: Sl 1 as to knit, K7, SSK, K1. Turn, leaving 3 [5] sts unworked.
Row 5: Sl 1 as to purl, P8, P2tog, P1. Turn, leaving 1 [3] sts unworked.
Row 6: Sl 1 as to knit, K9, SSK, K1. Turn, leaving 1 [3] sts unworked.
Row 7: Sl 1 as to purl, P10, P2tog. Turn, leaving 0 [1]st unworked.
Row 8: Sl 1 as to knit, K10 [11], SSK, K0 [K1]. Turn, leaving 0 [1] st unworked.
Row 9: Sl 0 [1] as to purl, Purl 0 [12], P2 tog. Turn.
Row 10: Sl 0 [1] as to knit, K0 [K12], SSK.

GUSSET:
With first free needle, pick up 10 stitches (or more depending on your length of heel) along left side of heel flap. On 2nd free needle, knit 10 instep sts. On 3rd free needle, knit rem 10 instep sts. On 4th free needle, pick up same amount of sts along right side of heel flap as you did on left side heel flap; knit first 6 sts of heel flap onto same needle; slip rem 6 sts of heel flap onto beg of first needle.

Rnd 1: On first needle, knit to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1. On 2nd and 3rd needles, K10. On 4th needle K1, SSK, knit rem sts.
Rnd 2:Knit all stitches around.
Repeat these two rnds decreasing to original 40 or 48 sts, whichever applies. Continue knitting in stockinette with same color yarn 4 rnds after finished decrease.
Next Rnd:Tie off (D); join (A)and continue in stockinette for approx. 2-1/4" (or desired length).
Next Rnd: Tie off (A); join (B) and knit 4 rnds.
Next Rnd:Add (C)and K1; pickup (B)and K3. Cont K1(C),K3(B)around. Tie off (C).

TOE:
Rnd 1: With (B) on first needle, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. On 2nd needle, K1, SSK, knit rem sts. On 3rd needle, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. On 4th needle, SSK, knit rem sts.
Rnd 2:Knit.
Continue these two rnds four more rnds. Tie off (B) join C)and continue Rnds 1 and 2 until 16 sts rem.

FINISHING:
Divide sts evenly onto two needles, cut yarn leaving long tail and weave toe together using Kitchener Stitch (or method of choice).

OPTIONAL:
Take 12" strands of 3 colors and tie bows at the back of the socks just for an extra fun flair.

PATTERN FOR SOCK #2
Using the picture as your guide for color use and placement of yarn, follow instructions same as for sock #1 to end of ribbing. Tie off (B), join (D) and eliminating the design, then follow instructions same as for sock #1 to end of heel turning.
Next Rnd:Tie off (D), join (A) and following same instructions as for Sock #1, knit in stockinette for approx. 1-3/4" (or desired length). Tie off (A), join (B) and knit 4 rnds. Join (C) and follow Chart 2A below.
Next Rnd: Continue with (B) for 4 more rnds. Tie off (B).

TOE:
With (C) knit 1 round, then begin toe decrease rnds as per instructions for Sock #1 and follow those instructions to completion of sock.
