Cuf's Lucky Socks

1 skein Opal #320 (or color of choice).
One pair Size #1 - 11" Circular needles.
NOTE: If 11" length is not available, use 12" or
"Two Circular method" = Two pair Size #1-29" circulars recommended
1 set Size #1 dpns [if not using "two circular method".
3 Markers - Tapestry Needle GAUGE: 7 stitches to 1 inch
SIZE SOCKS: Sized to fit small adult.
SKILL LEVEL: Written for knitters familiar with small circular needles or "Two Circular Needle Method". Pattern can be easily adapted for dpns.
BEGIN SOCK: With circular needles, cast on 60 stitches. (or as many needed for the size sock you want to create). Place a marker to mark center of heel, and beginning of rounds. Join yarn being careful not to twist the stitches. Work a K2, P2 ribbing for 1 ½ inches (or desired length).
LEG: Work in stockinette stitch for approximately 2 inches (or desired length). Work last round to marker. Knit 15 stitches past marker. Turn.
HEEL: ROW 1: (WS) With dpn, Sl 1, knit 3 stitches, purl rem stitches across to 15 sts past marker. Turn. Put remain sts on stitch holder or leave on circular needles to be worked later.
ROW 2: (RS) Sl 1, knit 3 sts, *slip 1, knit 1 Rep from * across to end. Turn.
ROW 3: Sl 1, knit 3 sts, purl remaining stitches across. Turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 til heel measures 2 ½ inches (or desired length) ending on a purl row.TURN HEEL:
NOTE: this pattern creates a boxed heel. Please feel free to use your own favorite heel instead.
ROW 1: Sl 1, knit to 5 stitches past center marker. K1, sl 1, psso, K1, Turn.
ROW 2: Sl 1, purl to 5 stitches past center marker. P1, p2tog, P1, Turn.
Repeat these two rows until all stitches are worked. Knit one row.GUSSETS: Pick up 14 stitches (or as many as needed) along left side of heel flap, knit across the 30 instep stitches, pickup 14 stitches along right side of heel flap, knit across the remaining heel flap stitches. Place all stitches back on circular needles and knit one round putting markers at beginning and end of the 30 instep stitches.. (This will mark for your gusset decreases). NEXT RND: Knit to within 3 stitches of first marker past the center marker. K2tog, K1. Continue knitting all stitches around to the next marker. K1, sl 1, K1, passo. Continue to knit all stitches to end of round. NEXT RND: Knit all stitches around. Repeat these two rounds and continue knitting and decreasing until you have the original number of stitches on your needle that you cast on. Continue knitting foot until you are 2 inches from desired length of sock.
TOES: (You'll now be working on dpns if not on 2 circulars)
RND 1: On first dpn, and starting at center marker, knit to within 3 stitches of next marker, K2tog, K1, remove marker. On 2nd dpn, K1, slip 1, K1, psso. Knit next 12 stitches. On 3rd dpn, knit to within 3 stitches to 3rd marker, K2tog, K1, Remove marker. On 4th dpn, K1, slip 1, K1, psso. Knit to center marker, and remove marker.
RND 2: Knit all stitches around.
Repeat these two rounds til 4 stitches remain on each needle. Put stitches from needle 4 and 1 on same needle. Put stitches from needle 2 and 3 on another needle (8 stitches on each needle) and Kitchener stitch toes together.
