MATERIALS:
2 skeins Opal sock yarn (or sock yarn of choice) Main Color (A) #18 Purple. Alternate Color (B) #3 Gold (or colors of choice)
NOTE: 100g of Main Color (A) and 50g of Alternate Color (B) is sufficient to make the larger size
Set of 5, Size 1 double pointed needles (or size needed for gauge)
Stitch Marker - Stitch holder - Tapestry needle

GAUGE: 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch = knit every round.

SIZE: Pattern is written for Ladies Small/Medium. Large is in parentheses

SKILL LEVEL: some experience with 2 color helpful but not required

SPECIAL NOTE: When working with 2-color stranding, remember the stranded area will not have elasticity, so it is very important to carry the yarns loose enough so that the sock will stretch over your heel.

BEGIN SOCK: NOTE: Pattern instructions are written for a cuff down sock.
With (A) cast on 64 [72] stitches. Divide stitches evenly on 4 needles and join yarn to form circle being careful not to twist the yarn. Place a stitch marker to mark beginning of round. Knit all stitches around for 4 Rounds.

RIBBING: Work a K2, P2 ribbing for 1 ½" (or length desired)
Next 2 Rounds: Drop (A), DO NOT CUT; join (B) and knit all stitches around for these 2 rounds.
Next Round: Drop (B), pick up (A) Knit one round.
Next 2 Rounds: Continuing with (A), Purl all stitches around.
Next 8 Rounds: Drop (A) pick up (B) and knit all stitches for these 8 rounds.

BEGIN TWO-STRANDED 5-ROUND MESSAGE AREA:
Next 5 Rounds: work the two-stranded 5-round area following the Message color chart below that pertains to your sock:
NOTE: Knowing that many prefer a Toe Up sock rather than a Cuff Down sock, I provided a chart for each version. I've also provided a chart with the entire alphabet for those who want to chart their own message. And for your convenience I've provided a blank chart to print out to chart your own message. Just make sure your message fits within the amount of stitches on your needles.

Next 8 Rounds: Drop (A) and continuing with (B), knit all stitches around.
Next Round: Drop (B) pick up (A) and Knit one round. Next 2 Rounds: Continuing with (A) Purl all stitches round for these two rounds..
Next 2 Rounds: Drop (A) pick up (B) and knit all stitches around for these two rounds.
Next 2 Rounds: Drop (B) pick up (A) and knit all stitches around for these two rounds.
Next 5 Rounds: WORK COLOR CHART B below. Cut B.
Next Round: K all sts around with (A). Cont with (A) knitting all sts around for another 1 ½" [or desired length of leg] End knitting to within 16 [18] sts from marker of beginning st. Join (B) K3, *drop (B), with (A) K2, drop (A) with (B) K2. Rep from * until you've worked 29 [33] sts. End with (B) K3. A total of 32 [36] heel stitches. Turn.

CONTINUING HEEL FLAP:
Put rem 32 [36] sts on waste yarn or a spare needle and continue heel flap working with both (A) and (B) and following the Heel Color Chart below, work for 2" [or length desired] in this manner:
Row 1: Right side, with (A) SL1, K2, *with (B) K2; with (A), K2. Rep from* to last 3 sts, with (A) K3, Turn.
Row 2: with (A) SL1, P2, *with (B) P2, with (A) P2. Rep from * to last 3 sts, with (A) P3, Turn.
Rep these 2 rows for 2 ½" [or desired length] ending with a Knit row just completed.

TURNING HEEL:
Row 1: Cut (B) and with (A) Purl to 2 sts beyond center: 18 [20] stitches. P2tog, P1, Turn.
Row 2: Slip 1st st, K5, K2tog, K1. Turn.
Row 3: Slip 1st st, work to within 1 st of last turn, P2tog, P1.Turn.
Row 4: Slip 1st st, work to within 1 st of turn, K2tog, K1. Turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all sts are worked.

GUSSETS:
Needle #1: Pick up 16 sts on left side heel flap, [or amount required]. Needle #2, Knit the 32 [36] instep stitches from holder. Needle #3, pick up 16 sts on right side of heel flap, [or same as opposite side]. Needle #4, knit heel stitches.

GUSSET DECREASE:
Round 1: Ndl 1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Ndl 2: Knit all stitches. Ndl 3: K1, ssk, k to end.
Round 2: Knit all stitches around.
Repeat these 2 rounds until 64 [72] sts remain. Then continuing with (A) knit all rounds until foot measures approx. 3" short of desired length.
NEXT 6 ROUNDS: Drop (A) join (B) and work the 6-round Chart C below.

TOE:
Cut (B) pick up (A) and Knit one complete round. Then decrease toe as follows: Round 1: Needle #1: Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Needle #2: K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K to end of needle.
Needle #3: Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Needle #4: K1, slip 1, K1, psso, K to end of needle.
Round 2: Knit all stitches around. Repeat these 2 rounds till 4 sts remain on each needle. Slip sts from #4 onto #1 needle and slip sts from needle #2 onto #3 needle. Using tapestry needle Kitchener toe closed. [or use favorite closing method]
